From a 9,449-acre ranch to a town Houston grew around

William Wright Baldwin bought the Rice Ranch in 1908. Bellaire incorporated ten years later with about 200 people. Today it is 3.6 square miles, surrounded by Houston.

  • 1910On December 12 the "Toonerville Trolley" begins running down the middle of Bellaire Boulevard. It runs until September 26, 1927.
  • 1918Bellaire incorporates on June 24, with about 200 people.
  • 1948Houston annexes the land around Bellaire on December 31.
  • 1955Bellaire High School opens. By its own account, in 1979 it became the first IB Diploma school in Texas.
  • 2009Teas Nursery (1910-2009) closes; its land becomes Evelyn's Park, 5 acres at 4400 Bellaire Blvd, a gift of the Rubenstein brothers named for their mother.
